I think one of the reason is as we move towards a more and more advanced information age, geeks has become the icons of the era. With superior ability to wield the power of information, it really reflects on the term "the pen is mightier than the sword".
As for homosexuality, avoiding the physical attraction factor, I think the reason why there are more and more people who embraces homosexuality, is because they find people of the same gender most of the time to be more understanding as they would have probably gone through similar experiences, and have similar train of thoughts. So I guess these people would prefer to spend their lifetime with someone whom they are comfortable with, rather than following to the norm of being with a partner of the opposite sex.
Hmm... typing out my thoughts in words doesn't seem to reflect the whole idea. I think this post needs more refinement.

I believe homosexuality starts with a person's sexual inclination first. But you are right about choosing a partner to spend the rest of their life with, some women do that because they lost trust in men, I think.
In one of my conversations with a homosexual friend, she explains that men are more sexually driven while women tend to look for a emotional bond. So a she-she couple would be on the heart-to-heart, while the he-he would likely be highly sexed. As for heterosexual couples, they comes in a great range along that spectrum.

I guess the MAN up there may have the answer of why man or woman have chosen this path.
