If you guys watched a lot of Hong Kong TVB series, you've most likely heard of this saying "新丝萝卜皮". And if you try to do a Google online, you would realize that many are not really sure of the usage of it, even Hong Kong people. Many are asking the meaning of it in forums. After looking around, the explanation is as below:
正確而言,它是「新絲蘿蔔皮」。富裕人家愛穿皮草,此乃身份象徵,貴重的是貂、狐、豹……珍稀獸皮,保暖又添聲價,雍容華麗。皮草中有一種老羊皮,毛長色白,形如切得很細的「蘿蔔絲」,故名。它雖暖,但不貴氣——只屬「入門初階」。社會地位不高的暴發戶學人穿皮草充撐場面,被嗤之以鼻:「乜野新絲蘿蔔皮呀?」
